Road and traffic signs is one of the most heavily tested categories in the DVSA theory test — and one of the easiest to improve with focused practice. The good news is that UK road signs follow a logical system: shape and colour tell you the type and urgency of a sign before you even read it. Red triangles warn of hazards ahead. Red circles give prohibitions. Blue circles give positive instructions. Yellow backgrounds indicate temporary signs, almost always at road works. Once this framework is in place, you can work out the meaning of an unfamiliar sign without having memorised it specifically. The signs that catch most candidates out include the national speed limit sign (white circle with diagonal stripe — not "no restriction"), the difference between no waiting and no stopping, and the various level crossing signs.
