The basics
What is the UK driving theory test?
The theory test is a computer-based exam you must pass before taking your practical driving test. It tests your knowledge of road rules, road signs, vehicle safety and hazard awareness. The test is administered by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) at test centres across the UK.
How much does the theory test cost?
The theory test costs £23 for car and motorcycle candidates in 2026. This fee covers both parts of the test. You pay when you book through the official DVSA website at gov.uk. Avoid third-party booking sites, which charge additional fees for the same test.
How do I book the theory test?
Book online at gov.uk/book-theory-test. You will need your UK provisional driving licence number. Payment is by debit or credit card. The only legitimate booking portal is the official DVSA website.
Where can I take the theory test?
The DVSA operates test centres throughout the UK. Major cities typically have slots available within one to two weeks. Rural areas may have waiting times of several weeks. If you are flexible on location, checking nearby centres can significantly reduce your wait time. Cancelled slots appear frequently, so checking regularly pays off.
What do I need to bring to the theory test?
You must bring your UK photocard provisional driving licence. Without it, you will not be allowed to sit the test and you will not receive a refund. Paper counterpart licences are not accepted. If your licence address differs from your current address, update it before your test date.
Can I take the theory test before I start driving lessons?
Yes. There is no requirement to have started driving lessons before taking the theory test. Some learners prefer to pass the theory test early so it does not become a bottleneck when they are ready for their practical test.
The multiple choice section
How many questions are in the theory test?
The multiple choice section has 50 questions. You have 57 minutes to answer them all, giving you over a minute per question.
What is the pass mark for the theory test?
You need to answer at least 43 out of 50 questions correctly to pass the multiple choice section. This is 86%.
Where do the questions come from?
All questions are drawn from the official DVSA revision question bank, which contains over 700 questions across 14 topic categories. The 50 questions in your test are selected randomly from this bank, so every test is different.
What topics does the theory test cover?
The test draws questions from 14 categories: alertness, attitude, safety and your vehicle, safety margins, hazard awareness, vulnerable road users, other types of vehicle, vehicle handling, motorway rules, rules of the road, road and traffic signs, documents, accidents and vehicle loading.
Can I go back and change my answers?
Yes. You can move between questions freely and change your answers at any time during the 57-minute session. You can also flag questions to come back to later. Use the remaining time to review flagged questions before submitting.
Are any questions worth more than one mark?
No. Each question is worth one mark. Some questions ask you to select more than one correct answer (the question will state this clearly), but each question still contributes one mark to your total.
Can I take a break during the test?
There is no formal break during the multiple choice section. After completing it, you are offered an optional break of up to three minutes before the hazard perception section begins.
The hazard perception section
What is the hazard perception test?
The hazard perception test is the second part of the theory test. You watch 14 short CGI video clips filmed from a driver’s perspective and click when you spot a developing hazard: something that would cause a safe driver to slow down, steer, or stop.
What is the pass mark for the hazard perception test?
The pass mark is 44 out of 75. Each of the 15 developing hazards across the 14 clips is worth up to 5 points.
Do both parts need to be passed in the same sitting?
Yes. You must pass both the multiple choice section (43/50) and the hazard perception section (44/75) in the same sitting. If you pass one and fail the other, the entire test counts as a fail and you must retake both parts.
Can I lose points in the hazard perception test for clicking at the wrong time?
No. Clicking at the wrong time does not reduce your score. However, if the system detects a repetitive clicking pattern (clicking continuously throughout a clip), it will score that entire clip as zero. One or two well-timed clicks per hazard is the correct approach.
Booking, timing and logistics
How long is the theory test certificate valid for?
Your theory test pass certificate is valid for two years. You must pass your practical driving test within this two-year window. If you do not, your theory test result expires and you must retake the theory test before booking another practical test.
How long after failing can I retake the theory test?
You must wait at least three clear working days before rebooking. There is no limit on the number of times you can retake the theory test. Each retake costs £23.
Can I reschedule my theory test?
Yes. You can change or cancel your booking at gov.uk/change-theory-test. If you give at least three clear working days’ notice, you can change your booking without losing your fee. Changes made with less notice result in losing your fee.
What happens if I do not show up for my theory test?
If you do not attend without giving the required notice, you will lose your £23 fee. You will need to rebook and pay again.
Is the theory test the same in Wales?
The test is available in Welsh as well as English at test centres in Wales. The format, pass marks and fees are identical.
Can I use a translator or dictionary?
No. Translators and dictionaries are not permitted. The DVSA removed foreign language voiceover options in 2014. The test is available in English and Welsh only.
Preparing for the test
How long does it take to prepare for the theory test?
The DVSA suggests around 20 hours of study for most candidates. The time you need depends on your existing knowledge and how quickly you retain information. Spreading revision over two to three weeks is more effective than intensive last-minute cramming.
What is the best way to prepare?
Practice regularly across all 14 question categories rather than focusing only on topics you find interesting. Use official DVSA revision materials as your primary source. Taking full mock tests under timed conditions helps you identify weak areas before the real test.
Do I need to study the Highway Code?
Yes. The Highway Code is the foundation of the theory test. Most questions are based directly on its content. Reading it thoroughly, particularly the sections on road signs, motorway driving and vulnerable road users, is essential preparation.
What score should I aim for in practice before booking?
Aim to consistently score 47 or above out of 50 in practice tests before booking. This buffer accounts for nerves on test day. A consistent practice score of 43 is too close to the pass mark to be reliable under exam conditions.

On the day
How early should I arrive at the test centre?
Arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment. Late arrivals may not be admitted and will lose their fee. Bring only your photocard provisional driving licence. Mobile phones, bags and personal items are stored in a locker before the test begins.
What happens when I arrive?
You will check in at the reception desk, provide your licence for verification and store your belongings in a locker. You will be shown to a computer terminal and given time to complete a tutorial before the test begins.
Can I use any aids during the test?
No. No notes, books, mobile phones or any other aids are permitted during the test. You will be provided with scrap paper for working if needed.
What happens immediately after the test?
Your result is shown on the computer screen immediately after you submit the hazard perception section. If you pass, you receive a pass certificate. Keep this document safe: you will need the certificate number when booking your practical driving test. Results are not sent by post.
After passing
What do I do with my theory test pass certificate?
You need the certificate number when booking your practical driving test. The DVSA system links your theory pass to your practical test booking. You do not need to present the physical certificate at your practical test, but keep it as a record.
Does my theory test pass expire?
Yes. The pass certificate is valid for two years from the date you passed. If you have not passed your practical driving test within two years, you must retake the theory test.
Can I book my practical driving test before passing the theory test?
No. You must hold a valid theory test pass certificate before you can book a practical driving test with the DVSA.
Failing the theory test
What happens if I fail the theory test?
You will be shown your score immediately. You will receive a breakdown showing how many questions you answered correctly in the multiple choice section and your hazard perception score. If you passed one part but failed the other, both counts as a fail.
How soon can I retake after failing?
You must wait at least three clear working days. For example, if you fail on a Monday, the earliest you can sit the test again is Friday (assuming no bank holidays). You must pay the £23 fee again.
Do I get to see which questions I got wrong?
No. The DVSA does not provide a breakdown of which specific questions you answered incorrectly. You receive only your total score and the pass or fail result. This is why consistent practice across all categories is more useful than trying to learn from a single test result.
2026 updates
Has anything changed about the theory test in 2026?
The DVSA has been introducing several updates in 2026:
Video-based scenario questions. A small number of questions now use short driving video clips followed by multiple choice questions about what you observed. These test real-world decision-making rather than fact recall.
CPR and emergency response content. New questions cover basic CPR procedures and defibrillator use at accident scenes, replacing some older first aid content.
Electric vehicle questions. Questions about EV safety, charging procedures, range management and eco-driving have been added to reflect the growing number of electric vehicles on UK roads.
Updated hazard perception clips. New CGI clips include nighttime driving, rain and fog scenarios.
These changes are being rolled out across test centres. The core format, pass marks, duration and cost remain unchanged.
